Say it with me.... UGLY CRY.
That's basically what happened after I heard this song.
Before I go any further, I know that this song came out last fall but, I am JUST getting around to it, so allow me to get into it with all of you.
At first, this song comes off like a sweet love ballad. It has all the audio and visual ingredients that most love songs require: slow tempo, sepia music video and a guitar strum that is reminiscent of a 50's prom slow dance.
But then it hits you at about 45 seconds into the song: this woman is heartbroken and going to the darkside.
It's the kind of moment that you realize that the writer of this song is telling you a story about a woman that has just seen her former lover with another woman. A brilliant twist on writing about jealousy.
This is some heavy emotional shit. I've been there, we have all been there.
You start to compare yourself to that person and wish you could be them; just so you could be with your former lover.
You ask "Maybe if I had all the things she has, he would have loved me."
For anyone in a break up, this song is right up there with Mariah Careys version of "I Can't Live", Adele's "Someone Like You" and Sam Smith's " Lay Me Down" (Acoustic Version).
Props to the song writer Lori McKenna... you got us.
